Finding work

What to do when you’re considered ‘overqualified’

‘Overqualified’ can be frustrating feedback. It may reflect assumptions about salary, motivation or how long you will stay, rather than whether you can do the work.

Find the concern behind the label

Where possible, ask which part of your background raises a concern. A recruiter may be wondering whether the role will hold your interest, whether the salary will suit you or whether you will be comfortable reporting to someone less experienced.

Explain why this role is a deliberate choice

Be specific about the work you want to do and why it suits this stage of your life. Explain what appeals to you about the responsibilities, not only what you are trying to leave behind.

Show relevant experience, not every achievement

Use examples that match the role. A long list of larger budgets and more senior titles may obscure the practical contribution the employer needs. Be accurate, but selective about what you emphasise.
