Career change

Changing careers after 50

A change after 50 does not have to mean starting again. The useful question is which parts of your experience you want to carry forward, and where they are genuinely needed.

Separate the job from the problem

Before choosing another industry, consider what you want to change: the work itself, the hours, the culture or the level of responsibility. A different employer or role may solve the problem without a complete career reset.

Test the fit before committing

Look at actual job descriptions and speak with people doing the work. Identify the skills you already have, any essential qualifications, and the likely income. A small project or conversation can give you better information than an expensive course chosen too early.

Make the practical picture visible

Consider your income commitments, available time and remaining working years. There is no single right answer. The aim is a move that fits both the work you want and the life you need to support.
