Addressing concerns about age in a job search

Age bias can be part of a job search, but a silent application does not tell you why you were unsuccessful. Focus on what you can investigate and influence without dismissing the frustration.

Check the evidence you are presenting

Show recent examples of learning, adapting and working with current tools or approaches relevant to the role. Concrete examples are more persuasive than saying you are adaptable or up to date.

Use conversations as well as applications

People who know your work may be able to introduce you to employers who need your experience. Ask informed questions about the role and organisation, rather than treating every conversation as a request for a job.

Keep the search specific

Review which roles you are targeting, where applications are getting stuck and what feedback is available. If you believe you have experienced discrimination, seek guidance from an appropriate Australian workplace or anti-discrimination service. Career coaching is not legal advice.
